Such a Crazy Kid

Asher has been learning so much... it helps to know when he's cranky that he's probably just working on something. The last couple days he's popped out the following words: kitty, please, home, duck. Not bad! Granted, they barely sound like the real word (except kitty, that's pretty close) but he's starting to connect some dots and it's so fun to watch! He likes being outside a lot but mainly enjoys following one of us around out there... no real sitting and just watching him play, he wants mom and dad to play with him :-)

Today turned out to be pretty nice out so we played for a bit in the backyard before naptime. Here's a cute photo I got!

Well, there are some minor things going on but nothing too worthwhile reporting here. Hope you're all enjoying the spring! I was really excited to get to hang out with grandma at the pool this summer but now with only 1 working car again, I may not get to go out there as often as I was hoping! At least we got a cheap kiddie pool so that'll be good. Hope you guys are all enjoying the sunshine... see you all around!

Asleep in the car.

Interesting Times

Posted by Joellen Armstrong Thursday, April 16, 2009 8:17 PM 1 comments
No, I'm not talking about our economy, government or the state of the world... although all of those are very interesting topics I enjoy right now. A bunch has happened the past couple days... maybe not a lot but my mind has been going like crazy so it feels like more than it actually is :-)

Let's start with the car. Our newer car, 2005 Ford Escape, has been going through oil like crazy even though it hasn't been leaking anywhere. When it would get really low there would be a loud rattle when accelerating or right before it would switch gears. We probably put about 10 quarts of oil in there within the last 2-3 months. At our last oil change they "took a look" and couldn't find a leak and didn't hear the rattle so they (and we) figured it was just the oil being too low. Well, it's gotten worse the past month and a lot worse the past week. Finally, yesterday was the low point.

The car was sounding so bad that Mark stopped on his way home from Salem and took it into the Woodburn Ford Dealership - mainly b/c we thought our warranty would cover mechanical breakdown. 4 hours and $200 later we find that one of the pistons was out of place allowing the oil to just be burned up by the engine and totally messing the engine up. The mechanic there said he would just replace the engine... the whole thing!!! He also said he could take it apart to see if just a few individual pieces could be replaced but that alone would take 15 hours (which is a lot of labor) and would be pretty expensive too. Granted, this is just a quote from the dealership place and I'm sure we could get it done for less elsewhere... but $7000 is what we're looking at. Yikes! The car is only worth maybe $12,000... hardly seems worth it! But we're still making payments and still owe more than it's worth (especially now) so we've been praying about that a lot lately :-)

All this to say we will never buy another Ford. No way. There is no way that a car that has been mostly regularly maintained should die like this in 4 years. Our warranty expired so that's out of the question too. We aren't "worried" b/c we know God will take care of it... more just irritated at the car and the dealerships. We've been very foolish in the past with our purchases and this vehicle was not one of our best decisions but we've been good to it and have really enjoyed having an SUV for carting around the kiddo and his loot everywhere we go. Thank God we have a 2nd car that we don't have payments on! We also have been loaned an older car from one of Mark's bosses so when we really NEED to be 2 different places and both NEED to be driving we'll still be okay. Like I said, it's mostly just being irritated at this point. But, I think I'll email Dave Ramsey with the situation and see what he thinks in the best route.

I was looking at the baby shoes business, crunching all the numbers and figured I would need about $7000 to really get it going all at once. I had resolved to just keep saving and that in time I'd be able to start it... maybe by next spring even... now, that is really, most likely going to be further off. Unless, my photography starts bringing in crazy amounts of money... which is not too likely :-) Not the craziest idea, but again, not likely. I will give it a shot though! I've been doing more work for Jeanne so we'll just be setting that money aside for a while. At least Mark has an awesome job where we make enough to pay all our bills and not worry about food... or even coffee!!! The crazy thing was just before Mark called me about the car stuff I had read in my bible study book about trusting God in trials... insane! He KNEW I needed to have that fresh on my mind. And it certainly helped. I felt especially safe and taken care of after bible study this morning too... I love the women at our church!!

Well, that's pretty much it. But I am going to bombard you with 8 Asher photos :-) We went outside for a while today and he was so adorable... what's new! Once the "snow mold" in the grass out in the backyard dries out we'll really be outside more! Also, we went for a walk once Mark took off for worship practice and I had an incredibly peaceful time and got a small workout in! I always hear God most clearly while walking or running outside... we truly serve an all knowing God who loves us way more than we deserve! Enjoy the photos!

This is one of his best odd faces.

"Hmm, what trouble should I get into first!"

"What in the world is this stuff?"

Watching intently as the motorcycle drove by.

Checking out the rocks...

and this was about the 10th rock he tasted and tossed.

I still have no idea what he was looking at.

He makes the funniest faces!

A nice and round 20 weeks!

Cute Photo Alert!

Asher was being so cute at breakfast... I had to take a few photos :-) Sometimes he is such a doll I cannot believe he came from me! Asher is really turning into his own little person and I love seeing his personality emerge... enjoy!

Tulips on Tuesday

Well, it was an eventful day yesterday... all pretty good events tho! I headed out of my house at 5am to meet Jeanne at the Wooden Shoe Tulip Farm in Woodburn for an early morning shoot. I probably should have called ahead tho... only about 5% of the field was anywhere near being considered "in bloom." It actually worked out really well despite all the obstacles. I couldn't find my charger the night before but it said "full" so I thought I would be fine... nope... battery died after about 100 shots, with only about 20 that are even worth keeping! I have so few shots mainly b/c, my tripod really bites! It's too wobbly with my big lens, so it was tough getting a shot in focus. Plus, so many of the tulips and other flowers didn't look good so that didn't help. And finally, I thought it would get hotter faster than it did so I was FREEZING in the shorts I'd worn. So, it all worked out well that I went when the tulips weren't blooming, b/c now I can go back in 2 weeks and be really well prepared! Here's one photo that I kind of liked...

I was planning on going to Jeanne's afterwards and doing some work. I even had Mark's sister Mary all set to come out and sit Asher for the day. However, Asher woke up with a fever just over 100 degrees (1 week delay from the chicken pox shot) so I headed home to take care of the sick babe. He was fine after some tylenol a couple times that day but it was like a free day for me so I got a lot done! Asher slept great last night so I feel mostly refreshed today and he's been the best kid ever so far (knock on wood). He's been giving lots of hugs and kisses and just being happy in general... I think the next few years should be lots of fun! Asher understands so much and does so many funny things! He started saying "Whoa" this morning with precise pronunciation... it's hilarious!

I'll have to post a pic of me soon. Last week I went from being round to actually looking (and feeling) quite pregnant. I should find out near the end of this month if we're having a boy or girl... we're still sticking with the girl inkling but who knows! I may be switching Dr's b/c of some insurance stuff so I'll keep you all updated with that. Have a great week!

Asher, that thing in the sky is what we call "The Sun"

Well I think it's safe to say Asher had a good weekend. He loves being outside with so much to see and so many new things to discover. We woke up on Saturday to a ridiculously nice day and thought, "Hey, why not go to the beach?" So we did...
We headed out to Newport and strolled out on Nye Beach which by the way is nice and flat and worked out great for the stroller. We went down the beach a ways and then took Asher out and let him run free. He had a great time feeling the wet sand between his fingers and through his pants :) Thankfully, Joellen thought to bring a change of clothes for him. He got to see a couple horses on the beach along with a half dozen or so dogs. Does it get any better than that? Anyway, Asher slept most of the way out to Newport and a good chunk of the way home. It really couldn't have worked out much better.
Today, it was super nice so we decided to join the 12,000 other people who thought it would be a good idea to go to the park. Asher had so much fun running around in the grass, monkeying around on the play structures and going down the slide (with a little help from me). We met up with a cluster of the Steele family and Tracy at the park and we also ran into John and Cindy Rodgers and Christy Sims (formerly Strout) while we were there. It was refreshing to spend an hour and a half without Asher whimpering or fussing even once! He really seemed to love it! I can't wait for him to experience the swimming pool and Grandma & Grandpa's this summer... Based on how much he loves being outside and taking a bath, combining the two might be more of a thrill than he can handle!

Good times at the beach in Newport!

My Newest Venture

Posted by Joellen Armstrong Thursday, April 2, 2009 3:44 PM 1 comments
So, many of you who know me well know that I am always up to something :-) Mark and I have discussed owning an online store for a long time now... I'm not sure what exactly intrigues us about it, but we always come back to wanting to have one. The last few weeks have been such a roller-coaster for me. I've been trying to balance a few different "projects", dealing with some insurance stuff, trying to get some work in for Jeanne and all on top of being a wife, mother and 4 months pregnant! It's enough to make most people at least slightly crazy! Anyway, all this to say I think I've found something I am really excited about doing. Here's my logo...

What is toddleton? Well, for starters, it's a line of leather baby shoes! That's right, I'm planning on opening an online store selling baby shoes! Many of you saw the site I posted a link to a while back that sells shoes and it just got me really thinking. I can hardly find the designs I like at the prices I like. This started when I was looking into getting a knitting machine and found some foreign suppliers... I thought "Well, I may as well look and see who's making baby shoes too!" I've been in contact with many suppliers, picking out lots of designs, designing my own shoes and comparing everything. I've got some plans in the works for pre-ordering, showing samples, marketing and all the logistics and I'm just getting more and more excited!

All of this to say, please keep me in prayer! Right now, this really feels like the right fit - for me and for our family. Ask that my plans would come to fruition only if it's what God wants me to pursue and that I would have the diligence and energy to continue in it as well. Over the next month I'll have a more solid plan of action, as well as some samples to start showing to make pre-orders available. Right now, I don't have a set timeline but I'm aiming to spend about 1 month selling pre-orders and getting the site running before I have shoes available for sale. Over the next couple weeks I'm going to post some images as well... you all better give me your opinions of the shoes once you see them... I really want to know what catches everyone else's eyes. I've been spending most of Asher's naps this week sorting this all out and it's been fun and rewarding so far! God has really been blessing my time, attitude and my efforts with Asher which has been a great confirmation for me too. I can't wait to share in all of this with you and hope that God will use this to spread his name! Thanks for all your support!

Asher trying out his new summer hat - thanks Tami H.!
