A New Post
Posted by Joellen Armstrong Tuesday, December 30, 2008 12:13 PM 0 commentsActually, I am talking about the new post on my Small Mustard Seed blog (see the link on the bottom left-side). It's been a long while since I've written anything there... of recent, I've just felt God pushing me to write in it but I've felt so inadequate. I'm reminded that no matter what I do, if I'm doing my best and surrendering it to His power, it will succeed. Maybe not in my idea of succeeding, but it's His idea, not mine :-)
Anyway, so yeah, it's there and I hope that many of you are inspired and challenged by it as I was and continue to be. Of late, my life has just been all about planning and fixing things, trying to make things better and getting out of messes I've gotten myself into. I realize that I have not been putting my time and energy into what God has wanted me to, even though I still don't know what that looks like. And I'm changing my prayers today; Instead of asking for solutions to my problems, I'm going to ask for peace in my circumstances. Trying to figure things out is STRESSFUL and usually doesn't come to any benefit!
So, all this to say that if you are struggling, you are not alone! I want so badly for my kids to see God in me and not the need for God in me... does that make sense?
Well, Asher is officially too big for the seat I usually put him in while I shower. My shower got cut short when he tipped the chair over and landed head first on the tile... he's going to have quite the bruise! Poor kiddo :-( I have no clue what I'll do with him while I take showers now... I am looking forward to moving and having a completely babyproof room for him! Be praying for the house search... we won't be moving until February but we'll need to line up a place that will work for us for the next few years.
Love you all!

Now that I've made my fair share of phone calls I can finally announce...
We are having another baby!!
I wouldn't say we "planned" it (okay, so maybe I did a little thinking about how the timing should go) but we are so excited! At this point, we really just want 2 kids and we thought having them close together would be great too... just for bonding for them and being in diapers for less years in total :-)
Anyway, my unofficial due date is September 1st but considering it will be another c-section I think they'll end up scheduling it more towards the end of August. Once I go to the Dr. I'll let you all know what they say my due date is and all that stuff.
Meanwhile, Asher is cruising easily on all the furniture and is constantly whining for 2 hands to hold so he can walk around the house... so in one way, it will be easier once he walks on his own b/c we won't have to be bent over... instead, we'll be chasing him everywhere! I don't know which is less fun... but I know I'll find out! When we walks with us he has hardly any balance but moves his feet so fast... we'll try to video tape it soon so we can show you! So far I'm feeling good. A little sick feeling throughout the day but nothing terrible yet. A bit more tired than usual but I'm preparing for worse :-) We're so excited... we think a boy would be great fun (playing with Asher and all) and a little girl would be super cute, plus it would be nice to have 1 of each you know. We'll see. And yes, we'll find out the gender as soon as we can!
In the meantime, you can all pray that we'll get approved on OHP for health insurance. With Asher, we were completely dirt poor so we got accepted easily. Now, we are blessed to have a steady income that pays our bills but that might make us too "rich" for OHP. Which is ridiculous b/c even with what we earn, if we have to pay for insurance and a C-section then we'll spend at least 1/3 of our income on that which would make us poor enough for OHP... ugh. I could hardly sleep last night looking at all of it but I spent a lot of time praying that God would just work out the details and provide for us. If I have to keep working for a while to pay for insurance and save a bit more for the deductible it's not the end of the world... just not my perfect little plan... which is usually not the best anyway. God knows best so I really should and will try to leave it up to Him!
Also, it was my birthday recently so Mark and I went out to the mall and to eat at McCormick and Schmick's where we had 2 free entrees! It was great. Asher is really suffering from being tossed to and fro for the past week but hopefully a few days at home will put him back in a happy state! I think his new walking desire in combination with the teething and trying to communicate stuff has a bit to do with the grumpiness he's been displaying so we just try to deal with each situation individually and not get too worked up... should be easier for me now with all this progesterone rushing through my blood... pregnancy does wonders for my mood!
I'll be posting some photos of our Christmas in Coos Bay soon. Asher had a blast and it was great to catch up with all the sisters! Asher particularly loves his aunt Catie (on my side of the family, yes, he has another aunt Katie on Mark's side) and his aunt Mary. Of course, he loves aunt Tracy... he gets to see her all the time so that helps. Really, he loves them all, he's just really attached to daddy right now. Anyway, got to go... love you all!

We woke up yesterday, turned on the news and lo and behold, Portland government employees were being asked to come in to work. The roads were peaking out from under the snow (on TV anyway, not in McMinnville) so we thought, hey let's give our trip to Coos Bay a try. I knocked the ice and snow off our Escape and drove around McMinnville a while to check out the roads. I seemed to have enough traction so we packed up, jumped in the car and for Joellen's folks' house. Once we got to Amity the roads were starting to clear and by the time we got to Salem, there was no snow on the roads at all!
Anyway, here we are and it's far from a white Christmas here! But hey, we managed to pull off our planned trip down here and Joellen was getting really stir crazy cooped up in the house with Asher for the past week+. Joellen's sister Gnome (short for Naomi) and The Face (Short for 'Trace the Face') are on their way down and should be here in a couple hours. In the meantime, Jo and I plan on meeting up with her friend Tina and husband Eric for lunch.
So here's a 'Merry Christmas' wish going out from our family down in Coos Bay to all of you out there. Make the Yule Tide Gay Y'all :)

Well, yesterday I was talking to my mom and I had said that this was the most snow I'd ever seen in my life... anywhere! And this morning, once again, I am totally shocked! More snow!!! The back of my car is about even with the top of my car b/c of the wind and the snow building up on the trunk. At the front, the snow pile is almost even with where the snow has accumulated with the snow on top of the hood. We really won't be going anywhere today :-)
Asher's Dr. appt got cancelled b/c his doctor couldn't make it in; not that we would have gone anyway. But his 9 month well check was already going to be 2 weeks late and now they want me to call on MONDAY!! Ugh, I guess it's looking like it will be closer to a 10 month appointment. Oh well, such is life!
The forecast on my phone is looking a bit better... it says the snow will keep coming until Friday! The whole week has said rain with snow but we've gotten nothing but snow here! It says there will only be rain on Saturday but now I'm not so sure what to believe! I'll be really sad if we don't make it down for Christmas until after the New Year... I'll be hoping and praying for the best!
In the meantime, Kory's business has been doing really well. He's got a couple major pieces of equipment that he's been using to clear parking lots for businesses in town and he's making a killing! Granted, he's been working in 24 hour chunks and sleeping at random parts of the day but this is such a blessing for him. After last winter, he pretty much spent the whole summer catching up from how far behind he had gotten - just with all the equipment and staff overhead - so it's great that the snow has been a blessing to his business! He did a lot of restructuring with employees, selling equipment and his own personal workload and it's really beginning to pay off!
Anyway, I'm tired, crazy, bored and stressed at the same time so I could use a little prayer... and a nap! Being in the house all day is usually great for getting work done... but after the 3rd day of it I am just too stir crazy to want to do anything. Luckily Asher is still being good and not terrorizing us... pray that it stays that way! Love you all...
More and More Snow

It was like a blizzard yesterday!!! It was snowing when I woke up, snowing until about 8pm and then we had some freezing rain. This morning, all the windows on the north side of the house have a nice coat of ice on them. A huge branch fell down in the front yard and thankfully was just a foot or two from hitting my car!!!
Church got cancelled today. The furnace in the ballroom was out of service so we couldn't very well have 150 people there in the freezing cold so, no church. And once again we are stuck at home going crazy. What is worse is that the forecast doesn't show it getting much better even until the day after Christmas!!! I might have to make some different arrangements Mom and Dad!! I'll call you today :-)
On a happier note, Mark's sister Mary and her husband Nate found out they are having a baby girl!!! Yay!!! Her name is Analeigh Lillian Brown. I think she said there is only 1 'n' in Analeigh... sorry if I messed it up Mary! We can't wait to see their little girl!!
Have a great day everyone.

More Snow

Yesterday, since Asher didn't take his 2nd nap, I laid him down at about 4pm when he was just too tired. Less than an hour later, I looked out the window and there was almost 4 inches of snow!!! It was crazy! At 4pm, there was just mush and I could see most of the grass but by 5pm it was a winter wonderland!
I went out to take some more photos today and it was rough going! Everything looked amazing... but just the angle, the cold and the lighting was a challenge for me. I'm definitely not much of a landscape artist... but photoshop helps! Plus, I'm used to everything needing to look perfect at 100% for all my stock work but that's not what most photographers judge themselves by. I'm hoping to branch out into other markets (already starting to with all the portrait work I've done lately) so here's something that's kind of different from my regular stuff... I would say I'm pretty happy with it... just disappointed that I can't use it on all my stock sites!
Happy snow days!
Another one...

No, not another baby (yet)! Another cute Asher photo...
I had some free time yesterday (being snowed in and all) and started to go through some older photos that hadn't been edited... I thought this photo was so cute!!!! I just couldn't resist sharing it! Also, it's snowing, again, so maybe I will get some better Winter shots soon... hopefully we'll be able to make it safely down to Coos Bay next week!

As the snow and freezing rain continue to coat the ground, Mark and I struggle to get stuff done! Mark is trying to finish negotiations with his old business partner but it's slow going... luckily they can sign and do it all over the phone and through faxing. Me, well, I'm stuck at home with a kiddo who like to go places... you can imagine how awesome that is! Asher actually hasn't been too bad... we just have to be creative with where to play in the house and when :-)
While Asher was sleeping, I took the monitor and my camera outside and got a few photos... here's one.
I just love seeing the snow! I hope to get some more photos while it lasts. Once the roads are clear (probably after New Years) I'm hoping to go to the Gorge again and get some more photos. Everything will look so nice all iced over!!! Anyway, that's pretty much it for now... lots of knitting and taking care of Asher... oh, and we'll be watching some more Lost tonight... yes!!!

Sorry to disappoint, but we haven't actually gotten to go out in the snow :-) Asher (or Mark and I for that matter) doesn't have any water-proof clothes and since it is only about 27 degrees outside I think we'll wait and see what the rest of the week brings. But... I do have some cute photos of Asher looking out at the snow! Enjoy :-)

I'm at the Newberg hospital as I write this with mom & dad Armstrong.
They are ok, but they were in a car accident on the way home from
church this morning and mom broke her hand. Dad has been discharged
and mom should be shortly... But they're both going to be sore in the
morning! The roads are slick and treacherous tonight and will be
tomorrow too. So stay home, fix yourself some hot chocolate and settle
in with a good book.

Sorry so long! Life always seems to get in the way of this blog :-) But I do love being able to keep you all updated and share our stories of Asher's silliness.
He really turned a corner this week. He stopped chomping on his fingers so much so I realized that must have been what was making him so cranky... I mean I knew that teething sucked but I didn't realize how much it was affecting him. So, now he has 4 teeth which he loves to chomp together and it looks like one of the bottom ones might be coming up soon too.
Asher has been so entertaining for Mark and I lately. He'll make the funniest sounds and he really seems to be enjoying making us laugh. In his highchair, he'll grin really big, make his fists really tight and just make this most hilarious sound! Oh, and did I mention he really has a set of lungs? I mean, the first second I heard Asher make any sound I knew he was going to be loud, but lately, it's gone up quite a few notches! But they have been mostly happy sounds so I'm not complaining at all.
Anyway, not much else has been going on. Mark and I have been staying busy with church activities (him leading worship, me helping plan the women's retreat and wreath making event) but it's been fun. The wreath making thing was on Saturday and it was super fun. I had lots of help with cleanup too which was such a blessing... I probably would have died without it!
Well, I did some work for Jeanne this morning and I thought I post a photo I edited that she took of us the last time we were out there... so cute!
Hopefully soon we'll be getting some photos done of all 3 of us... maybe before Christmas... we'll see. Love you all.

No, unfortunately I meant "whine" and not "wine." Asher just got in another tooth (top right) and the other will be popping out soon as well... he seems to be gathering a collection of those... at least I'm guessing by the way he gnaws on his fingers all day! Anyway, he has been quite the whiner lately. He used to have a cute little whimper but it's been turning into a loud, annoying wail that comes and goes while Mark and I are still trying to figure out how it's possible he could still be awake!
A couple weeks ago I thought he was dropping his 3rd nap... the past 2 or 3 days he's almost decided to drop down to 1 shorter nap... moms agree that this is not good! He slept great last night, woke up totally stinky at 6am but went right back to bed until 8am (whew)! Still, he only slept for 1/2 hour in the car this morning and maybe another 1/2 hour on the way home in the afternoon... then another small power nap around 4pm (which was totally weird) but now he's sleeping soundly, hopefully until 8am again.
His separation anxiety is mildly entertaining while out and about with friends and family. Then, it becomes incredibly frustrating alone at home while groceries are melting in the car b/c you can only carry 1 bag with the baby, but it's raining too hard to make more than 2 trips... then the baby screams for his life when I turn around to walk 5 feet into the kitchen to set down the 1 bag of soggy ice cream sandwiches... I'm not going crazy right... everyone else gets annoyed with these things yeah? Some days I just have to look through all his cute photos and remember the fun things to keep from going completely crazy... I say completely b/c I think I am past a certain point of no return. I know my husband would lovingly agree.
Anywho, I needed to at least jokingly say/type out some of these entertaining frustrations that I PRAY and PRAY I will laugh about SOON! :-) Thanks so much other moms for all your support in these early motherhood months... I hope to live through it with enough sanity to at least have 1 more!
Here's one of those cute photos I was talking about... I know! How can a baby this happy and joyful looking be annoying and whiney? I'll have to find another photo for my next post!

Today I shot this of Asher...
Isn't he adorable! He's such a ham whenever we shoot him in Jeanne's studio. I went there today with Tracy and Chloe (her little dog) and we had fun. It's definitely a challenge bringing Asher with us but he was pretty good considering he's still got a cold and didn't get a good nap. Anyway, I'll post a few more this weekend... they are all way too cute!

These shoes are really adorable! I really do think they are cuter than the Robeez shoes plus it's always great to help out another entrepreneur! When I get Asher his next pair I think I'll get the ducks... they seem to be his favorite animal so far :-)
The Days Go By
Posted by Joellen Armstrong Tuesday, November 18, 2008 8:57 AM 4 commentsWe are so bad about writing on here lately. Sorry for all you faithful blog-checkers :-) Anyway, it's been crazy (what's new) lately. Especially this week for Mark. He's got meetings in Portland today, a drive to Olympia and back tomorrow and a drive to Redmond on Friday! His work for PDR has been such a blessing even with all the driving! I don't know what we would have done without it.
My world has been really up and down lately too. Asher is a pretty good kid but his schedule has been weird and off the past month. I think he's getting ready to give up the 3rd nap but he's still to cranky without it. We had over a week where he was awake from nap #2 by 2pm and it took all our energy and strength to keep him up just barely until 6:30pm. He sleeps great at night... but a 5am start is more than either Mark or I can take... especially when it starts with a bloody murder scream! Haha. Well, it really isn't too funny but we've come out of that a little bit. He got a cold last week too so that certainly didn't help. But I've tried some new methods of keeping him awake and just learning more about what is helpful for him so that past few days have been far more pleasant.
Which brings me to my next topic... Asher was so unpleasant that I was going crazy! I was angry all day, frustrated, feeling helpless and just tired. One night I went to bed at 7pm, slept until 6am when Asher got up and I was still feeling as miserable as ever. I was struggling so badly with feeling like I didn't know what I was doing, thinking that God should have never made me a parent and that I just couldn't do it that I started avoiding talking to people about how I was doing. It's tough! But after a good talk with my friends Kristi and Chelsi I started talking to a couple other people about it and I just feel so much better. Well, the point of all this is I'm going to be doing some research on Thyroid problems b/c a couple people suggested that might be it. The fatigue and rate of weight loss I get with exercise are key things to having a hyper-thyroid. I just need to find some more info on it and see if it would be worth it to see someone even without insurance or what.
Well, other than that it's just been the daily grind. Jeanne's in Hawaii so I've been doing some work from home. I'm actually going to do a shoot with Tracy and her dog this week... Chloe is so cute! It should be tons of fun! I should get back to editing though... I still have some senior photos to finish up. Here's a cute one of Asher the other day...

Posted by Joellen Armstrong Wednesday, October 15, 2008 9:31 AM 1 commentsSo life has been kinda busy :-) I feel bad, I even missed blogging about Asher being 7 months old! So terrible!!! Anyway, it's been a bit hectic around here lately. I jumped into working for Jeanne so fast and then I just had so many events planned every week that I hadn't really gotten the chance to just sit, think and pray about everything. I really do feel I'm doing what I should but getting organized and my head wrapped around it all hadn't happened yet.
I've been going/sometimes going to our women's bible study in the evenings and it has been great! It's hard for me to go to an evening study but I go with Tracy and we've been so blessed by it. Most of the women are a bit older than us with grown up or almost grown up children so it's not our typical scene... it is incredibly rewarding though. And I know other women are blessed to see some younger gals coming so it's been just amazing all around.
So... about Asher. Man, he's a great kid. I'm constantly stumped by what he is doing! Yesterday he really started to pull himself up to standing when you hold his hands. And he gets so excited about it too! Plus he loves to hang on to the side of the bath when it's filling up for bathtime. He's also been "talking" a lot more and just taking great naps. He's getting quite a few teeth in... some on the top, some on the sides and he's always chewing on his fingers to try and ease that. I can tell when it's really bad b/c all he wants to do is be held and walked around with... no playing, no nothing... just walking. But he actually still sleeps pretty well considering. Last night, he went to sleep at 5:30pm and we assumed he would wake up and eat one more time. Nope... not until almost 11pm when Mark and I were about ready for bed. He took about 20 minutes to drink 2oz and fell asleep almost instantly. Poor kid... plus I was worried he would be up at 4am, wide awake! Nope again!!! He slept until just before 7am and he didn't even cry out once... well, if he did I just slept right through it so it couldn't have been too loud! And on top of all that, he's getting more hair and cuter every day! I've been putting a little gel in it every once in a while and giving him a mini-mohawk... it's so cute!
Thanks everyone for catching up! One more thing... I'm going to Coos Bay next weekend and while I'm down there I'll be doing the 2nd half of Austie's sister's senior photos... here's one from the studio...
She is incredibly photogenic and has amazing hair! Hope the rest of all your weeks go well... talk to you again soon!

She's such an encouragement and I'm glad to be able to be helping her out as well. We got a ton of great photos of Asher on Monday... he's such a great model! Some of hers are so cute!!! Here's one of mine...
Also, the car situation is not looking so great. It was a bit more expensive for all the stuff on the car... window controller command center needs replaced as well as the timing belt and possibly other stuff associated with that. So, those 2 things plus the tow, worst case scenario would be about $875. I talked to the person who sold it to us and she's willing to pay 1/2 the cost or (since she's had a couple higher offers) to take care of it, we'd give her the car back and she'd give us our first payment back as well. Ugh, what to do! My gut is saying to just start from scratch again. At the end of this week (after getting our $500 back) we'll have a bigger chunk of cash to put towards a car. Not that she's giving us a bum deal or anything but we just weren't planning on spending near $3000 for a car. And really, we don't have enough $$$ to pay for 1/2 of the repairs plus our next payment in 1.5 weeks. Sounds like the choice is kind of made for me :-)
I guess I'll probably be looking for a new car then... if you find a nice/not embarrassing to drive car for around $1500 let me know! I have our Escape until Mark gets back, we talked about me stealing the car once a week to still go out to Jeanne's... so maybe in another 2 weeks we'll be able to buy a different car outright. Maybe I'll even just rent a car 1 other day a week to work for Jeanne... a month of that would ensure I could get a nicer car... hmmm! Be praying, as usual.
Even Ruidoso has Starbucks :)
